The collection contains mostly deeds, leases, and plats for land in Princess Anne County, Va., 1732-1797, acquired or sold by Smith Shepherd, William Shepherd, and Mrs. Sarah Shepherd; the wills of Smith Shepherd, 1795, and Lemuel Shepherd, 1805, and inventories of the estate of Lemuel Shepherd, 1804, and of Mrs. Sarah Shepherd, n.d. Also, includes deeds, 1814-1816 and 1826-1830, for land in Princess Anne County relating to Adam, John, and Lemuel Cornick; letters, accounts, and bonds, 1842-1862, of Sarah M. (Camp) Shepherd, some concerning the hiring of slaves, and lists, 1856-1862, of slaves owned by her. Also, includes papers, 1863, concerning John Camp Shepherd's service in the C.S.A. Army of Northern Virginia, 15th Virginia Cavalry, Company I; letters, 1863-1907, written by or addressed to members and friends of the Shepherd family; Land family letters, 1846; and miscellaneous notes, letters, and receipts, 1824-1836.
